So our stroller (bugaboo bee) lets us remove the regular seat and attach our graco car seat. We leave the regular seat at home. We explain at check in that it separates and they tags the two seperate parts as gate check in luggage, meaning right before we get on the plane, at the end of the gate, we seperate the stroller/carseat and someone takes it. When we arrive, right at the door of the plane they give it back to us.

Rental companies charge a lot for car seats, so bringing our own saves money. We use our own car seat in their cars. An additional bonus, if our boy is asleep we can just take the car seat out of the car and snap it in the stroller without waking him up.
