You are correct. Delta put her on the following: DTW->NRT, with a connection from NRT->HKG.

I think the reason they did this was threefold: cheaper to keep her on Delta metal; they could shave a day's delay off her arrival (getting her there a day late rather than two days late); and they could make the DM family member who ticketed her original award ticket happier.
