I drove from Rome to Florence the beginning of the month. I drove off the Strada and onto some of those little backroads in Umbria and Tuscany. I had my IPad mini with me. I had a TIM sim card to make use of their 3G. I started with Google Maps, eh. I ended up using the "Maps" app that came with the Mini. It was perfect. Even when I missed a little turnoff, it would recalculate quickly and get me where I wanted to go.
