I have to admit that we were lucky. It was definitely not a paid J ticket. Luckily the J cabin had just enough capacity to accommodate us.
As I mentioned, on the last (DOH-JNB) sector, 2 people did not get upgraded. Another 2 people had to leave India early, so it was only 4 of us upgraded on the way back.
It was simply a case of upgrade at the gate subject to availability. If the seats are there, we get upgraded. If not, we sit in Y. No rocket science
We also "hounded" QR staff prior to the trip to push for the upgrade, so we pursued every feasible angle.
