Wireless connection issue

I have a Gateway NV series laptop (approx 18 months old; Windows 7). Starting yesterday, it would randomly lose the wireless connection. The wireless status bar shows a red X (no connection). When I try to troubleshoot, it can't find any issue or recommends that I restart my router. It doesn't even show my router ID. I can turn off the wireless (using the hotkey on the top row of the keyboard) and turn it back on but that doesn't fix the issue. The only way I can get a wireless signal again is to re-boot the computer. Meanwhile, my smartphone shows a connection and hasn't had any connection issues.

Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? Any input would be appreciated.
