I would definitely consider the spring or fall months due to the weather details given. I am sure I'd rather spend some winter time in Australia compared to Michigan.

My preferred carrier is Delta as I am getting a few miles on them. I do not know if they partner with another airline or codeshare for the LAX to SYD portion but some details in searches show they do one or other.

Hope that helps....
You need only about a 45 minute minimum layover outbound and DL flies DTW-LAX-SYD direct. There is also a chance the plane that you use for DTW-LAX will continue on to SYD.

On the return you should allow for about 90 minutes to collect your baggage, clear customs, drop off your checkin and reclear security (this is on the presumption you are a US Citizen or permanent resident).

You have two choices, fly DL all the way to Sydney and use Virgin within Australia or fly DL to LAX and then Virgin to Brisbane and within Australia. If you decide to fly Virgin to Australia and DL from DTW you will need to allow yourself more time as Virgin flights leave from a different terminal.
