it works in spain, italy, france. to get money out of an ATM, use a visa.

can you elaborate on your comment? in the past 14 months, i have regularly pulled 200€€€(now that someone was kind enough to tell me how to make a € sign on a mac, i want to put it everywhere) a day for 7 to 10 days in a row in bcn, lys, vce, and sicily. if the atm has a visa sticker on it, or even if it does not, "money when you need it" i have yet to be refused. pulled out 500+500 € in sicily to pay for room(cash only!!!). all withdrawals have been from an etrade stock account. no gas stations, no tolls. the last time i put gas in an unattended in italy the machine also accepted a currency(i think it was a 10€ note)
i have traveled a bit in europe in the past year or so, and never been refused for lack of chip and pin. have been to a few places that demand cash only. have been to a few places where there is a cash advantage.
