Checked-in car seats are broken or otherwise damaged by the airline, so using it in-flight is a way to mitigate for the risk arising from air travel-related damage causing problems on the ground.

.... and airlines can be pretty lousy about reimbursing for damage to checked-in car seats ... if the damage is even discovered on time.
