I've had mixed experiences with CCs at the Péages on the Autoroutes. One plaza takes the Amex, the next plaza rejects it and only takes my Visa. A third won't take any of them. Very hit or miss. But unlike here, nobody behind you seems to get impatient or even honk the horn. When the 3rd scenario happens, you have to back out and go to a manned lane.
It seems that the Autoroutes are regionalized and maintained by totally different ageicies throughout France.
Another thing, these tolls demonstrate what a bargain we have here in the US. Very high tolls on the Autoroutes!! And even higher in Italy on the Autostrada!!
