And one that maximizes profits...if you have chosen to use points rather than $$, you (in a rational world) are saying you value the xxK points less than the $yyy. Assuming they give you back the xxK points and take the $yyy (as most indicate will happen), they are just saying they agree with you and are maximizing their profit.

What Mr. Marriott was thinking was likely "I can't devalue their $$, but I sure can devalue their points"
