This is starting out as an interesting day: Dropbox has deleted dozens to hundreds of files from my desktop computer, and it would have continued until ??? had I not noticed the popups that suddenly appeared on the monitor. I've found a way to restore them from the Dropbox website, but it's a slow, multi-click process for each file.
Many of us depend upon Dropbox while travelling, so this might be a cautionary tale.
I have an Android tablet with Dropbox and Dropsync, and this morning I told Dropsync to synchronize the tablet with the desktop. I've done this many times before without issues, as recently as yesterday.
A minute or so later at the desktop I noticed a rapid series of popups telling me "Dropbox has deleted 4 files" "Dropbox has deleted [filename]" "Dropbox has deleted 6 files". Some of the files were quite recent, so I put the desktop Dropbox in Pause mode.
A few minutes later I realized that Dropsync on the tablet was still active, so I shut down the tablet.
I made copies of all the (remaining) files in my desktop Dropbox folder into a backup folder, to prevent further loss.
Now I've begun one-by-one Restoring any obviously-incorrectly-deleted files on dropbox.com. Because Dropbox on the desktop is paused, the Restored files are not yet coming back onto the desktop...I assume that when I un-pause Dropbox the carnage will continue, then maybe the Restored files will be available
I plan to turn off the wifi that connects the tablet to the internet, then power up the tablet and turn off Dropsync, then turn wifi back on.
An issue is that there seems to be no way at dropbox.com to sort the deleted files by date of deletion ("today" would be so handy!), so you have to evaluate each one individually.
Has anyone else experienced something like this, and do you have any hints on how to proceed?
