When we visited Sharm, back in 2008, we flew through Cairo and did some sightseeing there. It was safe at that time.
In Sharm we only left the hotel once to buy some t-shirts down in a small shop down the road.
I consider it a place for relaxing and superb scuba diving.
AFAIK there is not much in the area to see, only one monastery 2/3 hours away, by car, and today most likely I would not take the chances.
