I'm impressed that NZ references now seem to work on united.com, and that NZ can quote you the United ref. Having flown on many of these tickets, I always used to have to contact United to get the reference, which was painful - either waiting forever to get through to reservations, or using their incredibly clunky automated service which involved spelling out name, date, flight number etc to a voice recognition service.
How nice to see a genuine improvement - all too rare these days.
