On United system booking number ends with Z though I got into it with the air NZ one. The United flights just show their UA flight number on their systems.
Presumably it is how most code share flights are done.
I book my flights through a travel agent (required by work), and she couldn't find a UA ref for my booking. A phone call to NZ solved it in under 30 secs though (not counting the time waiting). So I guess that's how it should be done--try use the NZ ref on united.com, if it doesn't work, call NZ to get the UA ref.
