Why does delta.com even have a selection for departure time?

I know that DL (sometimes) reads FT, so maybe somebody on Virginia Avenue has an answer for this. I'm approaching MM soon so I've been around the DL block a time or two.

The current version of delta.com (and every previous version that I can remember) has selection boxes for departure time and date when doing a search. And like a schmuck, I dutifully enter my preferred departure time, only to have the website present me with options that are TOTALLY unrelated to what I entered. I enter morning departure and delta.com presents results with 5:45pm or 7:15pm departures. I enter afternoon departure and delta.com presents me with six options all before noon.

So DL, I gotta ask - why bother? I mean, if the time is meaningless, then remove the selection box. Or better still, make the selection box work. If ITA can understand preferred departure time, why can't delta.com?
