May I suggest tapping on the "full screen" tab which will maximize the picture to 100% of the screen.
That gets rid of the bars on the side but it simply horizontally stretches the picture which doesn't help since it distorts the picture.
The other thing with these screens, at least the ones in J class for flights to other continents, is that the screens are rather poor resolutions in the days of retina displays on phones and tablets.
