Happy says it was made clear to her that it's all about the number of points people made in 2013.
To me that's pretty low on citi's part. I mean, seriously. Just because someone made a lot of points that somehow makes them wrong?
This sounds exactly like UFB bank. Low end low class, low budget and unable to cope.
For those not familiar, UFB allows one to earn 1/2 a AA mile per $1 spent on their debit card. So like a few others in that game, one could load up the bank acct and go get money orders. Well, for me, there had been a short period in the winter where I was less able to go to my trusty low price superstore for MOs and instead elected to visit a very convenient USPS. Turns out that after a test, USPS actually worked for earnings with UFB! (other debit/miles banks do not).
Anyway in two months time I pushed about $18k thru so I got about 9k AA miles. The post 4-8 weeks out but they came.
Then I get this call from the back office one day.
Why am I spending so much in the USPS? I said, well, I am shipping a lot. I do ebay at home as my side hobby! yes, I told a fib. But ya know, when the back office calls, you are probably done anyway.
The lady and I talked for a bit and she never assumed nor assessed that I was buying MOs. I would have thought she would have. And that those would not be allowed. But no, she never did. Instead--and this is what kills me--she was like, "Oh well it sounds to ME that you are running a business and that you only have our bank and use it to get the miles! That's not the spirit nor intent of this program yada yada."
And I'm like, "um well yahhhh of course I used your bank to get the miles! I mean I have other banks where I put my money to earn interest, or cash back rewards or some bonus for signing up! What, did you expect me to open an account and do nothing with it?"
She's like "oh okay but still, it looks like you are running a business and we don't like that." I'm like "no ebay is my big hobby ma'am. I just happen to be wealthy and am sending a lot of big ticket items." And she goes, and I am not kidding: "Well we don't cater to people with money. And your activity is not allowed sir!" So with that I told her to go where the sun don't shine and to close my acct and send any remaining funds ASAP. They arrived by fed x the next day.
Point I'm making here is that it seems that citi is going down the path of: Well we offer these points and all these things but like UFB, we don't actually want you to GET that far! And if you do, see ya later!
THIS is why I would sue them.
