Firstly, I would take issue with that definition of the Schengen area.
It is far better to NOT define it with even an approximation, but just let people refer to a list/map and see if it applies to them.

Secondly, keep in mind Schengen is only an immigration/identity check area.
You have customs borders within the Schengen area, with some countries (or parts of them) that are part of the Schengen area outside the European Customs Union.

As such, you can encounter quite justified 'border controls' within Schengen.

I would suggest 'immigration/identity checks or controls' rather than 'border controls'.
