Florence airport is indeed a small operation, also seeing that most air traffic of travelers going to Florence lands at Pisa airport.

I agree with Aviatrix. It is is not the place where I would have elderly jet-lagged relatives just in from a long flight waiting for three hours.
Why not splurge and get them a nice car transfer into the city? That way they will have time to settle in at the hotel and rest before you get there.
