Just spoke to them - and it is the infant which is the spanner in the works- but they can change just my brother in laws flight for £79 including change fee so that is fantastic. Thanks for all your advice (and for future reference, they said I should have been able to cancel just the one leg of the return for one person - something to do with the fare bucket apparently!).
