I disagree with this advice too. You could say that the difference between F and C is not monumental (compared to the difference between Y and C), but then again, the price difference is usually not monumental either on award bookings -- e.g., 120K for round-trip saver C versus 140K for round-trip saver F on ORD-BKK if using UA miles.
On Lufthansa, for example, the difference is significant -- most aircraft have average (actually below-average in my opinion) angled-flat seats in C, compared to flat bed, with pyjamas, etc., in F, combined with extremely attentive service, better food (e.g., caviar), and of course first-class lounges, which, in FRA and MUC, are just about the best lounges in the world in my opinion.
I can understand settling for C if you have to and still having a great travel experience, but I would certainly go in looking for F.
