It's hit-or-miss with LH awards. They generally increase availability two weeks out, which of course isn't realistic for you (unless you book something else and then keep your eye out for a last-minute change). The only advice I can give is just to search starting in December 2013 and hope you get lucky.
The ANA/Thai option that you suggested (or Asiana/Thai, if OZ offers F on ORD-ICN) are very good options that are also realistic to find using UA miles. What is UR?
