Sorry, but we have no proof they didn't loose it someplace else. It's always "someone's word" in cases like this. And of course no one EVER looses the $20 costume necklace, it's always the high priced items
Plus OPs valuables were apparently safe while he was there, but he consideres it the problem of the hotel to keep up with his stuff after he didn't care enough to take it with him.
Having done some work in "loss prevention" sadly it's prime for the "opps we left a small cheap necklace" which becomes "irreplaceable family heirloom" worth thousands when it can't be found.
And often when pushed it comes out that "well I think the last place I had it was" hmm....
Hotels won't take the liability because people lie... (I once ran across a great story where the accuser actually filed complaints with several places for the same "theft" of his laptop ... and then the police found the stolen item in his home when they went to get a report, he was using it in front of them LOL!)
I left something in a hotel just a few weeks ago. I called, they can't find it. I didn't come on here and blame them... i am the idiot here not them.
