Why would you wait until you check-in? At that point, the hotel may not have the right room type available. Call after you make the reservation and ask for the Front Office or Front Desk Manager. They will do whatever is necessary to ensure that your request is communicated properly so that when you check-in, you don't have to hassle with the scrambling behind the scenes.
