Book IROP on the next available in the fare class and cabin originally purchased. Book VDB the same way. If you want to compensate passengers for the inconvenience of IROP or the thank them for VDBing, do vouchers or miles.
WFBF is not malarky, its the truth. There is nothing wrong with the airline compensating irops with a free upgrade before it processes medallion upgrades. All this talk of DM getting put in coach when FO's are in first is a little insane guys.... first, how often is this actually happening, and second...really? Its kind of DYKWIA at its worst. So the FO gets the occasional upgrade when a DM does not---really not a big deal (and this probably is fairly rare!)
