When I buy EBCI, on principal I buy it for my whole party. But, when I don't buy it, I just make sure I check-in at T-24. Never had a problem.
Seems like the folks that are the most worried about SWA's open seating are the folks that don't usually fly SWA. It really isn't anything to be concerned about as long as you check in at that magic 24-hour mark. And if you don't want to worry about that, buy EBCI.
