Refills are available everywhere, but I think SIM cards are mostly available in mobile phone shops and some retailers like Walmart and Target. Not 100% sure of that, though - I've never bought a prepaid SIM in the USA.
Ok thanks! Well it's not that I hope I'll have to use 911! Just that the calling is for incidentals so I don't need a large calling plan.
