If I needed the electricity to stay on in the room, I've always just taken a piece of paper from the hotel notepad, folded it up and stuck it in the slot. Never failed to work so far.

I don't keep the air con on, but it has been useful if I am charging some devices while I am out, or so I can actually see when I get back to the room (in resorts)
