Unless the system is broken, it doesn't take "hours" to get to a decent temperature. Put on a sweater while you wait. If the European locals can handle it, so can you.
North America is a very large area of land, all sorts of climates and a pretty wide variety of cultures, and I dare say greater genetic diversity than Europe.
