I never have any checked luggage so maybe it's possible that the attendants at the carousel just assume I'm not transferring and hide it from me...
Not sure whether opening hours of that security checkpoint are limited, I´ve used it 20+ times anytime between 12p.m. and 9p.m. and the checkpoint - incl. priority lane - has always been open.
Exiting the baggage drop-off area and turning left is correct, but I´m 99% sure the elevators (four large elevators IIRC) are very close.
Like you, I tend to travel with hand baggage only, and it´s quite possible signage is pretty bad. I´ll try to have a close look at signage available during my next trip.
