A cancel and rebook is not adding a number to a booking. Officially the answer to the OP is no, you cant add a number post booking. YMMV on the phone, but the whole concept is ridiculous that you cant add without cancelling first. Not only because the rate you had may not be available anymore. I cant think of any other major loyalty scheme that acts this way; airlines, hotels, etc.
