I think the partner booking sticky is the right place to start, because you need to have the knowledge in there to do what's in the thread a7800 links to. I agree that the definitive guide thread needs to go in favor of something more up-to-date, but every time I propose it, no one does anything about it. I still don't think that excuses someone from at least trying something before they ask a question. Maybe it's because I'm a professor and I won't let my students come say "I looked at problem 1 and I have no idea what to do." if they want help. They need to lay out what they've tried before I can help steer them in the right direction.
