I have identified the problem - my return flight JFK - DUS arrives on the morning of January 1st and availability in January does not exist.

For some reason there appears to be no reward availability for the first 3 weeks of January 2014 released on either BAEC or avios.com (I was quick to check availability on there also). After 21st January there is full availability so there is some kind of block on these dates.
