A very long-time lurker, avid reader and follower but newly registered poster on FT!

I had built up a rather nice stash of Avios (c. 180k) owing mostly to sign-on and referral bonuses the Amex Platinum I used to have and spend on this and my BA Amex PP.

Having hoarded this hoping for the trip of a lifetime my itchy feet had become unbearably itchy and I took the plunge and booked an Air Berlin redemption yesterday from DUS to JFK for a couple of days over NYE 2013/4 for myself and Mrs A406 without the A406 kids, thanks to the tip from Raffles re the lower taxes!

The initial plan had been to just use some more Avios for RFS tickets to get to DUS but, despite it being May and the trip being in December, there is zero availability on these dates.

Does anyone know the likelihood of more RFS availability to/from DUS opening up nearer the time or should I seek alternative ways of getting there?
