On mine the chip is in the datapage (the page with the pic, heavily laminated). But what I understand you are suggesting is to read that from "the other side" (in my case, from the non-pic side of the datapage)?
Certainly worth a try (except usually I fly LHR T3, and apparently their machines give you one attempt then kick you out.
But yes, I will see if I can get to try that.
