A Park Inn did it to me a couple of years ago - they asked (nicely) in an email to give them my credit card details as a guarantee, but I refused. There were no threats to cancel though. When I arrived for check-in the hotel was indeed full. My standard room had been long gone, so they gave me a corner suite!
