They installed these a few years ago, had nothing but problems and subsequently deactivated them. I'm guessing they are increasing the automation to cut costs especially as T3 is rapidly becoming the 'Ryanair terminal'. In terms of photos taken at LHR and LGW on domestics, I've never understood the point in this as they never actually check against your ID at any point so the only thing they check is you are the same person who went through the boarding card check before security when you board. Probably why they got rid of it years ago at Manch.
