I believe the logic behind it relates at least in part to other trips, where there is a (e.g.) a Saturday night rule, and this is a way of showing different price options depending on the various date options.

But on domestics (and certain other routes) it is often the case that buying two singles is cheaper than to buy a return - an anomoly that has been raised here before.
