I might try the "she's only 12" if I was a European without a passport. But as an American it would be risky.

I booked a similar deal at the Hilton Toledo (Spain) last summer and it included a meal that was really nice. Some mention was made that my daughter was really supposed to order off the "kids" menu, but she didn't.
I have heard mix replies when we discussed whether passports were checked at check-in. We are based in Europe and our passports are never checked when we were checking into hotels in Europe. The only time I ever need documentation was in Asia (Hong Kong and Singapore).

There was a restaurant that was very smart about finding out kid's age: they ask the kid directly because they don't normally lie.
