I had this same experience today when booking a J class flight from SYD to JNB. While the agent was making the booking I looked up Expertflyer seat map and saw rows of blocked seats.
After the booking was completed I went into the booking using my QF Platinum number, and the blocked rows practically fell away, and I was able to obtain 1A, which on a Boeing 747 is a pretty good seat

If you aren't having this same experience, it may be because the seats are blocked to all except QF status. If this is what is happening I would ring QF and explain that AA EXP is the same as QF whatever, and therefore you are entitled to allocate in some of the blocked seats, can they allocate you seat [whatever].
If this fails you should try again until it works. As you appear to be in the US, if you ring the QF UK number your call will be routed though to Australia and you may have better luck with QF Australia.
If this also fails, you will need to wait until about 3 days out and many of the blocked seats will be come available to everyone.
