In my case, I needed to proceed with four hours of intervention / training regardless, meet with appropriate personnel, drive several hours. No time to irrigate with filtered water, etc. and by the time I could tend to it the keyboard was permanently damaged. (I also used a solvent and compressed air to purge some of the contaminants from the laptop after partial disassembly.)
Basically, in rescuing electronic gear, time is often of the essence.
In this instance, where it may not be feasible - the OP should think how to document and then proceed to secure compensatory action from American.

Exactly, in cases where cola or other similar products are involved it can sometimes be best to flush out with water before using the various techniques like rice to dry it out.
If it was just a keyboard I wouldn't hesitate to wash it out to remove the coke then proceed to dry.
