My wife is planning to attend a conference in Canada. I'm going to travel with her so that I can take the advantage of the free nights paid by her employer. We are thinking about booking Hilton Properties. I'm a Hilton gold. My wife does not have any status. So my question is is there anyway I can earn points and/or stay credit with me staying in the same room?

btw, it really sucks to know that Amex charged foregin transaction fee even if the transaction is for Hilton properties. Don't really understand why they would do that. It essentailly telling card holder, don't use Hilton Amex for any foregin Hilton properties. What kind of strategy is that?

If I cannot get the points from the stay and the points from the credit card, I probably would switch to Marriot (my wife has status there).
