Only select new Android devices come equipped with the NFC chipset and software supported, "older" ones running GB do not - http://www.androidauthority.com/how-...ication-97144/

If you manage to find one, use "NFC TagInfo" free in Google Play (Store) - runs on my Nexus 7 (or 4) on Jelly Bean - prefer to run on stock (unmodified) rom. As others noted, it DOES not read all NFC chips.

The passport's RFID chip might've been exposed to a strong magnetic field and damaged, making it unreadable so I would've go nuts trying various means to read it. If it's faulty, then it will need to be replaced as it's most likely not a one-time thing unless the reader is defective.
