To add to your point...saw a Contour SVT the otherday, and that got me thinking...don't see any SVT Fords anymore. SVT Cobras are gone, no SVT Lightning Trucks, SVT Focus hot hatches. I was pondering the same thing! Can you imagine how an SVT Fusion would raise the Fusion's cache in the eyes of the reluctant family-car shopper? Especially if it came in reviews that even remotely compared it to its grill-sharing Aston.
Although they may never sell enough to profit, it seems that adding a crazy performance division to your brand is a terrific way to build halo effect on what makes an average car something to lust after. Most of the Euro brands seem to get what the domestics used to know years ago... AMG, M division, etc. A Golf is a ho-hum compact, a GTI makes Golfs seem cool. An Impreza is above average, an STI is buns-kicking and makes Imprezas appear possibly fun too.
