Interesting. I've tried to do this before as well (change my connecting flight due to IRROPS while in flight) and also was presented with an error screen.
I assumed it was a Delta IT "feature" and evidently it is, just isn't handled with a graceful error message like "You cannot change your flight details while your reservation shows you as 'in flight' on any of the legs in the reservation" or something equivalent.
Again, I've worked places where I'd have gotten fired, or at the very least reprimanded, for releasing code this crummy.
