There are also a number of *-UP fares (mostly H/Q, but there are others) which can book into the premium cabin for all passengers, not just elites.
There is a difference between the -UP fares that are sold to everyone and the Y/B/M elite upgrades. Unfortunately both are called instant upgrades. -UP fare instant upgrades book in P, Z, A, and perhaps other booking codes. The elite upgrades book into JN or PN. There are YUP fares that anyone can buy in some markets.

I guess; they are different cabins (P = First, Z = Business) so not really apples to apples.
