Is there a less scary way of flying the S to increase spacing on final approach?

I just got off a US/Mesa CRJ 900 at CLT. On final approach, after wheels down, we did a few sharp banks left and right - I think it was 4 times.

Even as a frequent flyer, I was a little scared. I was thinking about the 737 rudder problem in the 90s... Other passengers were alarmed too. I thought it was spacing but it was scary....

When I got off the plane, I asked the pilot if it was for spacing. He said yes.

Is there a less scary way to do this? I guess the alternative is to slow down more and fall from the sky?

Thanks...
