If you aren't buying tickets on the card you will not earn points at the highest rate.
A hotel branded card and Chase Sapphire Preferred has been my suggestion to my new hires.

Chase Sapphire preferred can be transferred to United and a couple other carriers and Marriott and priority Club are the big hotels. It can also be used to directly book travel that counts as a revenue ticket so you can use your points to fly Delta and earn Delta miles.

Look at your spending categories and get a card with good earnings in those categories.
The Chase Sapphire has been the best card I have ever had. I do call them and let them know where I am going to be as I have had my card hacked at least 3 times. I call to pay it and it is like I have a direct line. I never have to wait. They have been the nicest people to deal with, no matter what. I have accrued so many miles. I can and do check it online everyday. I hope if you have had a problem with your present card, you give them a try. I am just so happy with the card. I have had it ever since they offered it. No, I do not work for them. I have just had problems with other cards.
