A dozen hourly flights eastbound from LAX to JFK from approx 6 am to 5 pm plus three redeyes (9:30 pm, 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm) would total 15 daily flights. And nobody would have to arrive at 2:30 am.

Catch up? JFK-LAX has almost five times the number of local passengers each day compared to EWR-LAX. Most of the passengers on the UA flights to EWR are connecting to somewhere else, as UA carried an average of just 496 local passengers each way every day in the fourth quarter. Between LAX and JFK, AA carried an average of 825 local passengers each way, each day.
I'm not trying to restart the "EWR isn't NYC debate," but the numbers demonstrate that there just isn't much of a local market between EWR and LAX. No doubt that's part of the reason that UA continues its six daily flights to JFK from LAX.
With additional frequencies, AA can probably increase its market-leading position on LAX-JFK, along with the corresponding high revenues.
