As a US citizen, I've had over one hour waits at both. If you are not a US citizen, it will be worse - but then there are good days as well.

For me, arrival in LAX or SFO seems to be much less unpleasant, particularly SFO, and both are served from ZRH and FRA. If you are doing MRs, there are some very good transcon fares from LAX and SFO to EWR at the moment, so that could be a way forward.
